| Can Sony or Intel Surpass ATI and nVidia Graphics? | | Question | I was wondering. ATI, nVidia, SGI.. The main Video Chip Manufacturers (that I know of).
I want to know why Sony doesnt jump into the Video Chip bandwagon? That is.. I understand that they make their own VPU's for game consoles. But dont you think with their killer technology that they would be able to create Video Chips/Cards for PC's that would compete with, if not surpass ATI and nVidia?
Heck, even Intel seemingly could benefit from applying their CPU technology to VPU's right?
I know Intel has made a few graphics chipsets, but they simply suck compared to nVidia and ATI.
I am not very well versed in the mechanics of marketing so I just was curious as to why these companies havent bothered to make something killer with their big plants and high tech labs.
Maybe it's cheaper for some companies to just buy their VPU's from other lesser companies? But still.. With the battle of the PC video cards ever present. I'm shocked that someone 'real big' doesnt just say - 'You know what? - I think we need to show these companies how to build a solid VPU.. And get it right the first time.'
Anyway.. That's my question. | | Answer | Sony does not have killer graphics technology. PS3 utilizes an nVidia graphics processor based on the GeForce 7 series.
Intel is currently developing a high-end GPU to compete with ATI and nVidia that should release in 2009 or 2010. Intel has the resources to design and manufacture a graphics processor that can compete with ATI and nVidia in the PC market. Sony does not.
Intel is the one company that could make it a three-horse race.
