| Clueless About Cables, Inputs, Outputs, OMG! | | Question | I have a mitsubishi hdtv ready bigscreen. I have connected the monitor in to my av receiver with s-video. The monitor out on the tv is red, white, and yellow. No composite available. I get no picture from either the dvd or dvr but I am getting sound. What am I doing wrong?
mark | | Answer | You made the mistake of not giving model information for the Mitsubishi TV, AV receiver, DVD player, or DVR. So I will disregard the AV receiver and assume that the DVD player and HDTV support component video.
Component video involves three plugs (Y, Pb, Pr) just for video, while stereo audio involves two plugs (L, R) for audio. You'll have five plugs to connect on the HDTV and five on the DVD player to get high quality video and audio. Composite video is yellow and low quality. You don't want composite video when you can have component video.
On the DVD player (rear side), connect the five plugs to the correct outputs. The red, green, and blue video connections should be grouped together. The audio connections are white and red. Do not confuse red video with red audio.
On the HDTV (rear side), connect the five plugs to the correct inputs. The colors should match the ones from the DVD player. Again, do not confuse red video with red audio.
With the TV remote, select the correct source input. The button may be labeled as Source, Input, Aux, or Line. You should now have picture and sound through the TV.
For "big speaker" sound through your AV receiver, either connect the DVD player audio or the TV audio outputs to the receiver audio inputs. Then select the correct audio source on your receiver remote.
