Atari Gamer Gets Back Into Gaming
Question
I'm a complete video game newbie (other than my Atari 2600 I bought new when I was a kid). I want to buy a new console but have no idea which one. I like simple games, mainly because I can understand those. I'd like to try some more advanced games too but not too advanced. Thus, my questions are: which of the three systems (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) is the most popular with the gaming crowd? Which has the most games? Which of the three is the easiest to play live (online)? Thanks Hank!
Answer
The most popular with the gaming crowd (in the U.S.) is Xbox 360. Nintendo Wii is quickly catching up, but one could argue that a significant portion of the Wii crowd is not really part of the gaming crowd. Anyhow, popularity is not an important factor, as none of the game systems will have a lack of games or gamers.

Xbox 360 has the most games and probably will continue to have the most games. Xbox 360 also has the most games with high review scores. But another system could have more games that are suitable for you.

Xbox 360 is the easiest to play games online, but Xbox Live online multiplayer has a subscription fee of $50 per year. The other two consoles are free to play online.

A quality selection of simple games can be found on Xbox Live Arcade. Those are small, simple downloadable games for Xbox 360 that cost only $5 or $10 each, and a few are $15. Many support online multiplayer. Nintendo Wii also has a large library of simple downloadable games from older systems like NES and SNES, but these games do not include online multiplayer.

There's a good chance that Wii Sports, Wii Play, and some other similar games on the Nintendo Wii are on your level. These "Wii" games have proven popular with an audience not normally associated with gaming. The primary controller is a motion remote that you move through the air to swing a tennis racquet, throw a baseball, etc. You'll find it to be either an exciting way to play games or a gimmick that gets dull after a short while.

For the visual experience, Xbox 360 is the definite winner. The Wii visual experience is an entire generation behind Xbox 360.

For the primary controller method, you have to try both Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii to decide for yourself, as it is a matter of preference.

Most Games: Xbox 360 (but all systems have many games)
Visual Experience: Xbox 360
Online Multiplayer: Xbox 360
Primary Controller: To Be Determined by Consumer

It's also up to the consumer to decide the importance of each factor.

PS3 is an also-ran. It's similar to Xbox 360 but with fewer games.
